In postmodern times, \u201cCorporate Social Responsibility\u201d has enabled companies to do something good for society and to give something back to the community. Some companies may plant trees or donate money and others might start working in close cooperation with Non-Profit and\u00a0 Non-Governmental Organizations to help people in need. I visited an intercultural Erasmus Intensive Program at <a href=\"http:\/\/international.yasar.edu.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yasar University<\/a> in Izmir, Turkey, where I got in touch with the big Turkish telecommunications company called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.turkcell.com.tr\/site\/en\/turkcellhakkinda\/Sayfalar\/genel.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Turkcell<\/a>\u201d. Together with Corporate Responsiblitly Specialists from Turkcell and university lecturers, who teach CSR-related aspects of marketing we talked about good practice examples of CSR but also about the dark sides of the concept.<\/p>\n<p><strong>absolutely helpful<br \/>\n<\/strong>Turkcell afford to have a dedicated department which only deals with CSR issues. In our first category\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tr.linkedin.com\/pub\/burcu-haylaz\/25\/560\/886\" target=\"_blank\">Burcu Haylaz<\/a> tells us, how their company is doing charity work in Turkey and how quickly they took action after a horrific <a title=\"Earthquake in province of Van, Turkey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2011_Van_earthquake\" target=\"_blank\">earthquake struck the province of Van<\/a> in Eastern Turkey in 2011. Besides that I was really captivated by the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/yatirimci-2011-eng.turkcell.com.tr\/leader-in-social-responsibility\/contribution-to-education.aspx?o=DahaFazlaSosyalAlt01&amp;osa=dfs01\" target=\"_blank\">Snowdrops<\/a>\u201d project for young women and by the idea of the digital moneybox for collecting contributions from the wider public.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>absolutely sceptical<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong>Unfortunately not every company is really practicing CSR to genuinely help others. Some companies are rather trying to help themselves. Often the campaign appears like 100% marketing for the company. In this category I talked with Ann Knaepen from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kuleuven.be\/english\" target=\"_blank\">Leuven University College<\/a>\u201d in Belgium, Carla de Lima from the <a href=\"http:\/\/portal.ipb.pt\/portal\/page?_pageid=154,73334&amp;_dad=portal&amp;_schema=PORTAL\" target=\"_blank\">Polytechnic Institute of Bragan\u00e7a<\/a> in Portugal, Dr. Reka Jablonkai from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uni-corvinus.hu\/index.php?id=44509\" target=\"_blank\">Corvinus University<\/a>\u201d in Hungary and Anne Burke from the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyit.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\">Letterkenny Institute of Technology<\/a>\u201d in Ireland. Together we talked about the phenomenon of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenwashing\" target=\"_blank\">Green Washing<\/a>\u201d. This means, that companies that have a bad image in society, are using low-input CSR measures to artificially clean their own image.<strong><strong><\/strong><\/strong> Green Washing, the negative side of CSR, seems to be an activity which flourishes in the shadow of all the good practice examples of corporate social responsibility. So I guess we need to be careful when we hear about large companies practicing CSR. There is a chance that they may be doing good things for the wrong reasons. <a title=\"Oxfam on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxfam\" target=\"_blank\">Oxfam <\/a>and <a title=\"Turkcell on Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turkcell\" target=\"_blank\">Turkcell <\/a>on the other hand seem to be great examples of companies and organisations that seriously and honestly try to improve the lives of all their stakeholders, not just their customers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>absolutely idealistic<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong>In our last category I would like to come back to our Turkcell CSR specialists. Together with them and the Turkish lecturers, we discussed theoretical aspects of CSR and their practical implementation. My Turkish colleague Duygu Turker who teaches CSR at the university asked <a href=\"http:\/\/tr.linkedin.com\/pub\/derya-k%C3%B6kten\/35\/2a1\/763\" target=\"_blank\">Derya K\u00f6kten<\/a> from Turkcell what factors in her view make a CSR activity successful.<strong><strong><\/strong><\/strong> It is refreshing to hear how the university lecturers and the practitioners were working together on building this bridge between theory and practice in our seminar.
