Welcome to the first ever intercultural podcast. ‘absolutely intercultural!’ is its name and, as far as we know, this is the first podcast in the world to deal with intercultural issues. We’ll be releasing a new episode every second Friday evening, looking at all intercultural aspects of human intercultural communication. For example, we’ll be hearing from students on foreign work placements, asking how teachers can make use of intercultural exercises and simulations in their classroom and sharing with you any intercultural gossip we come across. ‘absolutely intercultural!’ won’t be so much about passing on information but more about starting an intercultural dialogue between the makers, and you, the contributors and listeners.

I strongly advise minority students to pursue the idea of studying abroad. They can learn so much to help their people in their own community once they return. Currently our college has opportunities to study abroad in Japan, Mexico, Spain, and Denmark. Student who have studied in other countries appear to love their educational experience. This is the best way to get a global education.

I think that studying abroad is a great idea for students to get a global perspective on issues. With the current financial crisis, students will find that studying abroad could help them to finance their education. That is, many college students are on full scholarships. For minority students, in particular, studying abroad affords them the opportunity to learn the customs and beliefs of other cultures. There is a myth that minority students who study abroad are ashamed of their own culture; this is false. You must appreciate your own culture before you can develop an apprecitation of other cultures.

When minority students study abroad, they open up so many doors to a better life. They can learn ways to improve conditions in their culture once they return to their native country.

Thanks for highlighting the Dusseldorf conference. There's just so much going on with the Flat Class approach that boiling it down to 20 minutes inevitably means that we leave out some good stuff. It's sort of just down the road from me even though I live in Denmark so who knows.

Dr. Borgman;

After viewing your piece I wonder how you feel about standardization in the light of the cuturally diverse standards. I am a fan of diversity producing more robust results in the long run, but if education is culturally diverse and then used universally in a global community, can we really say that a college degree, for example, in one culture is the equivalent of that in another culture?

It seems rather hard to convince companies to invest in education the way Turkcell has. However, it's possible for things to change. I'm thinking that if companies want better prepared individuals to hire at some point education will become a point of interest.

Excellent topic for discussion. I am heavily burdened wih my own corporate social responsibility in my daily work. I feel it is a tremendously unfair advantage in the global market that some cultures demand social responsibility of their corporations and some other cultures have no desire for corporate social responsibility at all. We have a major portion of our business plan directly related to our responsibilityto the community, charities and other stakeholders while others in our same industry have no burden in this area.

I believe we all will bear the burdenif some do not act in a socially responsible mannermake it a double hitfor those of us that already do meet that responsibility.
